University of Southern California, Los Angeles, Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering, 2001
Grants
Ongoing contract research from several orthopaedic implant manufacturers and support from the Los Angeles Orthopaedic Hospital Foundation.
Research Area
Dr. Lu is the Director of the Tribology Laboratory of the JVL Orthopaedic Research Center located at the Orthopaedic Institute for Children (formerly Orthopaedic Hospital) in downtown Los Angeles. Dr. Lu has conducted extensive studies of wear of joint replacement materials, including hip, knee, and spine disc replacements. He has used joint wear simulators as well as computer models (finite element analysis) to evaluate and improve the performance of many types of orthopaedic implants. In the last decade, Dr. Lu has conducted tribological analysis of retrieved metal-on-metal total hips and surface replacements. He has established novel methods for using coordinate measurements to calculate the volume of wear debris removed from an implant during in vivo use or simulated wear tests. He has published several landmark articles on the wear evaluation of highly wear-resistant (crosslinked) polyethylene as well as metal-on-metal hip replacements.
Awards
CeramTec Award for research on the use of ceramic in joint replacements, Germany 1998
The Hip Society John Charnley Award 2006
Best Scientific Exhibition Award from American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons 2006
